Turn to Food to Improve Your Mood
Most of us have been conditioned to believe that comfort foods are terrible and to be avoided. Often, if the comfort food is a high sugar food or some other junk food, this holds true. Other times, though, comfort foods can be altogether nourishing and it’s good for you to eat them. There are some foods that, when you consume them, can boost your mood. If you feel a little bit down and you need a happiness pick me up, try a couple of these.
Eggs, would you believe, are terrific for helping you combat depression. You must see to it, though, that what you make includes the yolk. When you want to cheer yourself up, the yolk is the most important part of the egg. Eggs, the yolk especially, are high in B vitamins. These B vitamins are great for helping to boost your mood. This is because the B vitamins increase the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that dictate how you feel). Try to eat an egg and feel a lot better!
Put together some trail mix of nuts or seeds. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etc are all wonderful for raising your mood. This is possible as these foods are high in magnesium which boosts your production of serotonin. Serotonin is called the “feel good” chemical and it tells your brain how you should be feeling all the time. The more serotonin in your brain, the more pleasant you’ll feel. Not just that, nuts, specifically, are a terrific protein food source.
If you would like to battle depression, you should eat some cold water fish. Wild salmon, herring, mackerel, trout, and tuna are all high in omega-3s and DHA. Omega-3 fatty acids and DHA are two things that truly help the grey matter in your brain function a lot better. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can seriously elevate your mood.
Some grains are really excellent for fighting off bad moods. Teff, barley, millet, quinoa, etc are all good for helping you be in a happier state of mind. These foods fill you up better and that can help improve your moods also. It’s not hard to feel depressed when you are starving! The reason these grains are so wonderful for your mood is that they are easy for your body to digest and process. They are easier to digest than other foods which helps kick up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, improves your mood.
Green tea is fantastic for moods. You just knew green tea had to be mentioned, right? Green tea is packed full of an amino acid called L-theanine. Research has proved that this amino acid promotes the production of brain waves. This will improve your brain’s concentration while at the same relaxing the rest of your body. You already knew green tea could help you become healthier. Now you know that green tea can elevate your mood also!
Now you can see that junk food isn’t necessarily what you should eat when you wish to help your moods get better. Try these suggestions instead!
