How to Improve Your Mood with Food
Most of us have been conditioned to think that comfort foods are bad and are to be avoided. Often, if your comfort food is essentially candy or other junk foods, this can be true. At times, comfort foods can be very nourishing and good for us to consume. There are several foods that actually can raise your moods when you eat them. If you feel a little bit down and you need a happiness pick me up, try some of these.
Eggs, believe it or not, can be actually terrific at dealing with depression. Just be sure that you do not toss the yolk. The egg yolk is the most important part of the egg in terms of helping elevate your mood. Eggs, the egg yolk especially, are stuffed full of B vitamins. The B vitamin family can be great for raising your mood. This is because the B vitamins improve the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that dictate how you feel). Eat an egg and feel a lot better!
Put together a few trail mix of nuts or seeds. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, etc are all fantastic for helping to boost your mood. This is because these foods are rich in magnesium, which helps to increase your production of serotonin. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical that tells your brain how you feel at all times. The higher your levels of serotonin, the better you are going to feel. Nuts, along with raising your mood, can be a superb protein source.
Cold water fish are excellent for eating if you are wanting to fight depression. Cold water fish including tuna, trout and wild salmon are high in DHA and omega-3 fats. These are two things that promote the quality and the function of your brain’s grey matter. It’s the truth: consuming tuna fish sandwiches can really help you fight your depression.
Grains can be excellent for overcoming a bad mood. Quinoa, barley, teff, millet, etc are all great for helping you feel happier. They can help you feel full for longer also, which is a mood improver. It’s not difficult to feel low when you are starving! These grains can help your mood elevate as it’s not at all hard for your body to digest them. They are simpler to digest than other foods which helps bring up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, improves your mood.
Your mood can really be helped by green tea. You knew it had to be included in this article, right? Green tea is found to be chock-full of an amino acid known as L-theanine. Studies have shown that this amino acid essentially induces brain waves. This will improve your brain’s concentration while simultaneously relaxing the rest of your body. You likely already knew it is not difficult to get healthy when you consume green tea. And now you know it can help raise your mood too!
You can see, you don’t have to turn to junk food or foods that are not good for you so you can feel better! Try a couple of of these suggestions instead.
