For the most part, people have been taught to think that “comfort” foods are terrible for the body and have to be avoided. But if your comfort food is candy or junk food this might be true. Other times, comfort foods can be utterly nourishing and good for us to consume. Some foods actually do elevate your mood when you consume them. If you feel a little bit down and you need an emotional pick me up, try some of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, can be truly wonderful at dealing with depression. Just see to it that you don’t throw away the yolk. When you wish to cheer yourself up, the egg yolk is the most essential part of the egg. Eggs, the egg yolk particularly, are rich in B vitamins. These B vitamins are terrific for helping to elevate your mood. This is because these vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that affect your mood–run better. Consume an egg and feel better!

Make several trail mix of nuts or seeds. Your mood can be improved by eating peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, and other types of nuts. The more of it in your brain, the better you’ll feel. Not just that, nuts, specifically, are a great protein food source.

Cold water fish are wonderful for eating if you want to battle depression. Cold water fish such as tuna, trout and wild salmon are rich in DHA and omega-3 fatty acids. These are two substances that boost the quality and function of the grey matter in your brain. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can seriously elevate your mood.

Some grains are truly excellent for driving away bad moods. Barley, millet, quinoa, etc are great at helping you have a happier mood. They help you feel full too which can actually help to improve your mood. Feeling famished can truly make you feel terrible! These grains can improve your mood because it’s easy for your body to digest them. You digest these grains quicker than other foods which can help boost your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel more pleasant, mood wise.

Green tea is actually great for your mood. You just knew green tea had to be in this article somewhere, right? Green tea is rich in an amino acid referred to as L-theanine.
