Many of us think that comfort foods are bad for us and that we need to avoid them. Often, if your comfort food is basically candy or other junk foods, this can be true. Make a trail mix from seeds and/or nuts. Your mood can be elevated by consuming peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, and other types of nuts. This is possible as these foods have a bunch of magnesium which boosts serotonin production. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical substance that directs your brain how you feel day in and day out. The more serotonin you have, the more pleasant you will feel. Nuts, on top of improving your mood, can be a super source of protein.

If you would like to overcome depression, you should eat some cold water fish. Salmon, herring, tuna, mackerel, trout, etc, they’re all loaded with omega-3 and DHA. These are two substances that increase the quality and function of the grey matter in your brain. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can greatly raise your mood.

Some grains are really excellent for fighting off bad moods. Quinoa, barley, millet, etc are terrific at helping you be happier. They fill you up better and that can help you with your moods as well. It’s easy to feel low when you feel hungry! These grains can elevate your mood since it’s not at all difficult for your body to digest them. You digest them quicker than other foods which can help boost your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel better, mood wise.

Green tea is wonderful for moods. You were simply waiting to read that here, weren’t you? Green tea is high in a specific amino acid called L-theanine. Research has proven that this amino acid induces the production of brain waves. This helps focus your mental energy while simultaneously calming your body. You probably already knew it is not difficult to become healthy when you consume green tea. Now you are aware that it helps you to raise your moods as well!

Now you can see that junk food isn’t necessarily what you need to eat when you want to help your moods get better. Try a couple of of these tips instead.
