How to Boost Your Mood with Food

Mostly, people have been trained to think that “comfort” foods are bad for the body and should be avoided. If your comfort food is candy or junk food this might be true. Otherwise, comfort foods may be very nourishing and good for you. A number of foods honestly do elevate your mood when you consume them. When you are feeling a little down and are in need of an emotional pick-me-up, test out a few of these.

Eggs, you may be amazed to learn, are great at combating depression. You must make sure, however, that what you make includes the yolk. The yolk is the part of the egg that is the most crucial in terms of helping you cheer up. Eggs, the yolk in particular, are high in B vitamins. B vitamins can actually help you improve your mood. This is because these vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that affect your mood–work better. Try eating an egg and be happy!

Build a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Your mood can be raised by consuming peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, and so on. This is because these nuts are loaded with magnesium, which helps to boost your production of serotonin. Serotonin is known as the “feel good” chemical and it tells your brain how you should be feeling at all times. The higher your serotonin levels, the more pleasant you will feel. Not just that but nuts, particularly, are a great protein food source.

Cold water fish are good if you want to feel happier. Salmon, herring, tuna, mackerel, trout, and so on, they’re all chock-full of omega-3 and DHA. DHA and omega-3s are two things that really help the grey matter in your brain function a lot better. It’s true: consuming a tuna fish sandwich can earnestly raise your mood.

Some grains are actually excellent for fighting off bad moods. Barley, millet, quinoa, etc are great at helping you feel better. These foods can help you feel full for longer also, which can help your mood too. Feeling hungry can actually make you feel terrible! The reason these grains help your mood so much is that they are easy for your stomach to digest. You digest them faster than other things which can help promote your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel more pleasant, mood wise.

Your mood can really be helped by green tea. You just knew it had to be in here somewhere, right? Green tea is rich in a particular amino acid known as L-theanine. Research has discovered that this amino acid promotes the production of brain waves. This helps better your mental sharpness while relaxing the rest of your body. You already knew that green tea helps you become healthier. Now you are well aware that green tea helps you to raise your moods too!

Now you realize that junk food isn’t necessarily what you should eat when you want to help your moods get better. Try a couple of of these suggestions instead.
