Try Using Food to Improve Your Mood

For the most part, people have been trained to believe that “comfort” foods are not good for the body and need to be avoided. If your comfort food is candy or junk food this is true. Other times, however, comfort foods can be completely healthy and it’s good for you to consume them. There are a number of foods that basically can boost your moods when you eat them. When you are feeling a little down and are in need of an emotional boost, test out a few of these.

Eggs, you might be astonished to discover, are great at combating depression. You should make sure, however, that what you make includes the yolk. The egg yolk is the part of the egg that is the most important in terms of helping raise your mood. Eggs, specifically the yolks, are full of B vitamins. These B vitamins are fantastic for helping to improve your mood. This is because the B vitamins increase the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that affect how you feel). Try consuming a few eggs to cheer up!

Make a trail mixfrom various seeds and nuts. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, etcetera are all fantastic for helping to elevate your mood. This is because seeds and nuts have a lot of magnesium which increases your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is the “feel good” natural substance that tells your brain how you feel all the time. The more you have of it, the more pleasant you will feel. Nuts, on top of bettering your mood, can be a great source of protein.

Cold water fish are great for eating if you wish to beat back depression. Cold water fish such as tuna, trout and wild salmon are chock full of DHA and omega-3 fatty acids. DHA and omega-3s are two things that truly help the grey matter in your brain run a lot better. It’s the truth: consuming tuna fish sandwiches can really help you battle your depression.

It’s not difficult to overcome your bad mood when you consume grains. Teff, barley, millet, quinoa, etc are all good for helping you feel better. These grains can help you feel full for longer as well, which can help your mood too. Feeling starved can be terrible! These grains can help your mood elevate because it’s not at all hard for your body to digest them. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps jumpstart a rise in your blood glucose which in turn takes your mood to a happier place.

Your mood could really be helped by green tea. You were sure it had to be in here somewhere, right? Green tea is rich in a certain amino acid called L-theanine. Research has proven that this amino acid induces the production of brain waves. This helps improve your mental energy while at the same time calming your body. You knew that green tea helps you feel healthier. And now you know green tea can help raise your mood too!

As you can see, you don’t have to turn to junk food or foods that are terrible for you so you can feel better! Try a couple of of these tips instead.
