Try Using Food to Elevate Your Mood

Many of us have been taught to believe that comfort foods are bad and should be avoided. At times, if your comfort food is made of candy or other junk foods, this can be true. Other times, however, comfort foods can be totally nourishing and it’s good for you to eat them. There are some foods that actually can raise your moods when you consume them. When you are feeling a little down and are in need of an emotional boost, try some of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, can be truly terrific at dealing with depression. Just be sure that you don’t toss out the yolk. When you want to cheer yourself up, the egg yolk is the most crucial part of the egg. Eggs, the yolk in particular, are rich in B vitamins. B vitamins can actually help you improve your mood. This is because these vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that affect your mood–work better. Consume an egg and feel happier!

Make a trail mix from seeds and/or nuts. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, and so on are all terrific for helping to elevate your mood. This is possible because these foods have a bunch of magnesium which raises your production of serotonin. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical that directs your brain how you feel all the time. The more of this chemical in your brain, the better you’ll feel. Nuts, along with elevating your mood, can be a superb source of protein.

If you would like to fight depression, try eating some cold water fish. Salmon, herring, tuna fish, mackerel, trout, etc, they’re all chock-full of omega-3 and DHA. These are two substances that increase the quality and function of the gray matter in your brain. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can earnestly boost your mood.

Some grains are actually great for repelling bad moods. Quinoa, barley, millet, etc are great at helping you have a happier mood. They fill you up better and that can help you with your moods also. Feeling famished can really make you feel awful! The reason these grains help your mood so much is that they are easy for your body to digest. You digest them faster than other things which can help promote your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel more pleasant, mood wise.

Your mood could truly be helped by green tea. You were sure it had to be in here somewhere, right? Green tea is loaded with a particular amino acid called L-theanine. Studies show that this specific amino acid can essentially stimulate brain waves. This helps focus your mental energy while simultaneously making the rest of your body more relaxed. You probably already knew how easy it is to be healthy when you consume green tea. Now you know that green tea can elevate your mood as well!

See, you don’t need to consume all that junk food when you wish to feel better! Test out these tips instead!
