How to Improve Your Mood with Food

Mostly, people have been trained to believe that “comfort” foods are terrible for the body and have to be avoided. If your comfort food is candy or junk food this can be true. Other times, though, comfort foods can be completely healthy and it’s good for you to eat them. Several foods actually do raise your mood when you consume them. If you are feeling a little bit down and you’re in need of a happiness pick me up, try a few of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, are terrific for helping you combat depression. Just make sure that you don’t get rid of the yolk. The egg yolk is the part of the egg that matters most in terms of helping you cheer up. Eggs, the yolks in particular, are high in B vitamins. These B vitamins are great for helping to improve your mood. This is because the B vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that control your mood–run better. Try eating an egg and cheer up!

Make a trail mix from seeds and/or nuts. Your mood can be raised by consuming peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, etcetera. This is because seeds and nuts have plenty of magnesium which increases your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is referred to as the “feel good” chemical substance and it tells your brain how you should be feeling all the time. The more of this chemical in your brain, the better you’ll feel. Not only that but nuts, particularly, are a great source of protein.

Cold water fish are good if you wish to be in a better mood. Cold water fish such as tuna, trout and wild salmon are high in DHA and omega-3 fats. These are two substances that boost the quality and function of the grey matter in your brain. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can seriously raise your mood.

It’s easy to drive away your bad mood when you consume grains. Teff, barley, millet, quinoa, etc are all great for helping you feel happier. These foods fill you up better and that can help elevate your moods too. It’s easy to feel a little bit off when you feel hungry! The reason these grains can improve your mood is that they are not difficult for your stomach to digest. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps jumpstart a rise in your sugar levels which in turn takes your mood to a happier place.

Your mood can really be helped by green tea. You were sure green tea had to be in this article somewhere, right? Green tea is found to be rich in an amino acid known as L-theanine. Research has proved that this amino acid promotes the production of brain waves. This will improve your brain’s concentration while at the same calming the rest of your body. You were already aware that that green tea helps you feel healthier. And now you are aware that it can help raise your mood too!

Now you realize that junk food isn’t necessarily what you have to eat when you wish to help your moods get better. Try these suggestions instead!
