Turn to Food to Improve Your Mood

Most of us have been taught to believe that comfort foods are bad and are to be avoided. At times, if the comfort food is candy or some other junk food, this is very true. Other times, though, comfort foods can be altogether nutritious and it’s good for you to eat them. There are several foods that actually can boost your moods when you eat them. If you feel a little bit down and need a happiness pick me up, try a few of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, are wonderful for helping you fight depression. You should be sure, however, that what you make includes the egg yolk. The yolk is the most important part of the egg iwhen it comes to helping raise your mood. Eggs, the egg yolks in particular, are rich in B vitamins. The B vitamin family can be terrific for elevating your mood. This is because these vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that control your mood–function better. Consume an egg and jolly up!

Build a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etc are all good for elevating your mood. This is possible since these foods have a bunch of magnesium which boosts serotonin production. Serotonin is a feel-good substance that tells the brain how to feel at any given moment. The higher your serotonin levels, the happier you will feel. Not just that, nuts, specifically, are a great protein source.

If you want to defeat depression, try eating some cold water fish. Herring, trout, tuna, wild salmon, and mackerel are all rich in omega-3s and DHA. These are two things that actually help the grey matter in your brain work a lot better. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can basically help you fight back depression.

It’s not difficult to overcome your bad mood when you are eating grains. Quinoa, millet, teff and barley are all truly great for helping increase your happiness levels. They help you feel full too which can actually help to improve your mood. Feeling famished can be a real downer! The reason these grains are so wonderful for your mood is that they are easy to digest. They are easier to digest than other foods which helps bring up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, raises your mood.

Your mood could truly be helped by green tea. You just knew it had to be mentioned in this article, right? Green tea is loaded with an amino acid known as L-theanine. Studies prove that this specific amino acid can essentially induce brain waves. This will improve your brain’s concentration while also loosening up the rest of your body. You likely already knew it is not difficult to become healthy when you consume green tea. Now you know that green tea can improve your mood too!

Now you can see that junk food isn’t necessarily what you have to eat when you want to help your moods get better. Try a few of these suggestions instead.
