Try Using Food to Elevate Your Mood

Mostly, people have been trained to believe that “comfort” foods are terrible for the body and need to be avoided. Often, if your comfort food is a high sugar food or some other junk food, this is true. Otherwise, comfort foods may be very nutritious and good for you. There are some foods that, when you eat them, could improve your mood. If you are feeling a little bit down and you’re needing an emotional pick me up, try a number of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, are fantastic for helping you battle depression. Just be sure that you do not throw away the egg yolk. The yolk is the part of the egg that is the most crucial in terms of helping you cheer up. Eggs, the egg yolk particularly, are rich in B vitamins. The B vitamin family can be great for lifting up your mood. This is because they help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that control your mood–work better. Try consuming some eggs to cheer up!

Make a few trail mix of nuts or seeds. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, etcetera are all fantastic for helping to elevate your mood. This is because seeds and nuts have plenty of magnesium which boosts your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical substance that dictates to your brain how you feel all the time. The more of this chemical in your brain, the happier you’ll feel. Not only that, nuts, particularly, are a terrific protein food source.

Cold water fish are wonderful for eating if you are wanting to beat back depression. Tuna, trout, mackerel, herring and wild salmon are all full of omega-3 fats and DHA. Omega-3 fatty acids and DHA are two things that truly help the grey matter in your brain run a lot better. It’s true: consuming a tuna fish sandwich can earnestly elevate your mood.

Grains can be excellent for fighting a terrible mood. Quinoa, millet, teff and barley are all really great for helping increase your happiness levels. These foods can help you feel full for longer as well, helping you feel better. Feeling famished can actually make you feel terrible! The reason these grains are so good for your mood is that they are easy for your stomach to digest. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps promote a rise in your glucose levels which in turn brings up your mood to a happier place.

Green tea is actually excellent for your mood. You were just anticipating to read that here, weren’t you? Green tea is loaded with an amino acid called L-theanine. Studies have discovered that this amino acid basically stimulates brain waves. This helps focus your mental energy while at the same time relaxing the rest of your body. You were already aware that green tea could help you be so much healthier. And now you are aware that green tea can help raise your mood as well!

Now you know that junk food isn’t necessarily what you should eat when you wish to help your moods get better. Try some of these tips instead.
