Try Using Food to Elevate Your Mood

Mostly, people have been taught to think that “comfort” foods are bad for the body and must be avoided. Often, if the comfort food is candy or another junk food, this is very true. Otherwise, comfort foods could be very nourishing and good for you. There are several foods that, when you consume them, can better your mood. If you seem to be a little bit down and in need of an emotional pick me up, try some of these.

Eggs, would you believe, are fantastic for helping you fight depression. Just be sure that you do not throw away the yolk. Every time you want to cheer yourself up, the yolk is the most vital part of the egg. Eggs, specifically the yolks, are loaded with B vitamins. These B vitamins are terrific for helping to improve your mood. This is because they help improve the function of your neural transmitters, the parts of your brain that affect your mood. Eat an egg and be happy!

Put together a few trail mix of nuts or seeds. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, and so on are all wonderful for raising your mood. This is because these nuts are high in magnesium, which helps to boost serotonin production. Serotonin is the “feel good” natural substance that dictates to your brain how you feel at all times. The more of it in your brain, the happier you’ll feel. Not just that but nuts, particularly, are a terrific protein source.

Cold water fish are excellent for eating if you want to combat depression. Salmon, herring, tuna fish, mackerel, trout, and so on, they’re all loaded with omega-3 and DHA. These are two things that truly help the grey matter in your brain work a lot better. It’s true: consuming a tuna fish sandwich can really help you fight back depression.

It’s easy to drive away your bad mood when you eat grains. Quinoa, barley, teff, millet, etc are all wonderful for helping you be in a happier state of mind. These grains fill you up better and that can help improve your moods too. Feeling famished can really make you feel terrible! The reason these grains are so wonderful for your mood is that they are easy to digest. They are easier to digest than other foods which helps bring up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, elevates your mood.

Your mood could really be helped by green tea. You knew it had to be in here somewhere, right? Green tea is packed full of an amino acid called L-theanine. Studies have shown that this amino acid actually induces brain waves. This helps raise your mental acuity while having a relaxing effect on the rest of your body. You knew that green tea helps you feel healthier. Now you know it can help improve your mood as well!

Now you know that junk food isn’t necessarily what you have to eat when you are wanting to help your moods get better. Test out these hints instead!
