Learn How to Improve Your Mood with Food

For the most part, people have been conditioned to believe that “comfort” foods are not good for the body and need to be avoided. Sometimes, if the comfort food is candy or another junk food, this holds true. Other times, however, comfort foods can be altogether nutritious and it’s good for you to eat them. Several foods really do elevate your mood when you consume them. When you feel a little down and need an emotional boost, try a few of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, are terrific for helping you combat depression. Just see to it that you do not throw away the yolk. The yolk is the part of the egg that is the most crucial in terms of helping raise your mood. Eggs, the egg yolks in particular, are loaded with B vitamins. These B vitamins are wonderful for helping to elevate your mood. This is because the B vitamins increase the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that tell you how to feel). Try eating a few eggs to jolly up!

Make several trail mix of nuts or seeds. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etcetera are all great for improving your mood. This is possible since these foods are high in magnesium which boosts serotonin production. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical that tells your brain how you feel all the time. The more serotonin you have, the happier you will feel. Not only that, nuts, particularly, are a terrific protein food source.

If you want to battle depression, try consuming some cold water fish. Salmon, herring, tuna, mackerel, trout, etc, they’re all chock-full of omega-3s and DHA. Omega-3 fatty acids and DHA are two things that truly help the grey matter in your brain run a lot better. It’s the truth: eating tuna fish sandwiches can actually help you fight your depression.

Some grains are truly great for driving away bad moods. Quinoa, millet, teff and barley are all truly excellent for helping boost your happiness levels. They can help you feel full for longer also, which can help your mood too. Feeling hungry can really bring you down! The reason these grains are so wonderful for your mood is that they are easy for your stomach to digest. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps jumpstart a rise in your glucose levels which in turn brings up your mood to a happier place.

Green tea is truly great for your mood. You just knew green tea had to be included in this article, right? Green tea is rich in an amino acid known as L-theanine. Research has found that this amino acid induces the production of brain waves. This will improve your brain’s concentration while also relaxing the rest of your body. You knew that green tea helps you feel a lot healthier. Now you know that green tea can elevate your mood also!

As you can see, you don’t need to consume all that junk food when you want to feel better! Try these hints instead!
