Foods That Make Your Mood Better

A lot of us have been taught to believe that comfort foods are bad and to be avoided. Often, if your comfort food is made of candy or other junk foods, this holds true. Other times, however, comfort foods can be completely nourishing and it’s good for you to eat them. There are several foods that, when you eat them, may improve your mood. When you feel a little down and are in need of an emotional boost, try a few of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, are great for helping you battle depression. Just make sure that you do not toss the yolk. The yolk is the part of the egg that matters most in terms of helping raise your mood. Eggs, the yolk in particular, are stuffed full of B vitamins. These B vitamins are terrific for helping to raise your mood. This is because the B vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that dictate your mood–run better. Consume an egg and feel a lot better!

Put together a trail mixout of a variety of seeds and nuts. Your mood can be improved by consuming peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, etc. This is because these foods are rich in magnesium, which helps to boost serotonin production. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical substance that directs your brain how you feel at all times. The more serotonin you have, the more pleasant you will feel. Not only that but nuts, specifically, are a great protein source.

If you would like to overcome depression, you should eat some cold water fish. Wild salmon, herring, mackerel, trout, and tuna are all rich in omega-3s and DHA. DHA and omega-3s are two things that really help the grey matter in your brain run a lot better. It’s true: consuming a tuna fish sandwich can greatly elevate your mood.

Grains can be good for fighting a terrible mood. Quinoa, millet, teff and barley are all truly wonderful for helping increase your happiness levels. They fill you up better and that can help improve your moods as well. Feeling starved can truly bring you down! The reason these grains can improve your mood is that they are not hard to digest. You digest them more quickly than other things which can help increase your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel better, mood wise.

Green tea is excellent for moods. You were just waiting to read that here, weren’t you? Green tea has been found to be chock-full of an amino acid known as L-theanine. Research has proved that this amino acid promotes the production of brain waves. This helps focus your mental energy while at the same time calming your body. You knew that green tea helps you become healthier. Now you are aware that green tea helps you to raise your moods too!

As you can see, you don’t need to consume all that junk food when you are wanting to feel better! Try some of these tips instead.
