Foods That Can Make Your Mood Better

For the most part, people have been conditioned to think that “comfort” foods are not good for the body and need to be avoided. At times, if your comfort food is a sugary food or some other junk food, this is true. At times, comfort foods can be perfectly nourishing and good for us to consume. There are a number of foods that, when you consume them, could boost your mood. When you are feeling a little down and are needing an emotional pick-me-up, try some of these.

Eggs, you may be astonished to find out, are great at battling depression. Just make sure that you don’t get rid of the yolk. The yolk is the most important part of the egg iwhen it comes to helping raise your mood. Eggs, the egg yolks especially, are rich in B vitamins. These B vitamins are great for helping to boost your mood. This is because they improve the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that affect how you feel). Try to eat an egg and feel a lot better!

Put together a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, and so on are all great for improving your mood. This is possible since these foods are high in magnesium which raises serotonin production. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical substance that tells your brain how you feel all the time. The more of this chemical in your brain, the happier you’ll feel. Not just that, nuts, in particular, are a fantastic protein source.

If you would like to beat depression, try eating some cold water fish. Herring, trout, tuna, wild salmon, and mackerel are all rich in omega-3 fats and DHA. These are two substances that promote the quality and function of the gray matter in your brain. It’s true: consuming a tuna fish sandwich can greatly raise your mood.

Grains can be wonderful for overcoming a terrible mood. Teff, barley, millet, quinoa, etc are all wonderful for helping you feel better. These grains can help you feel full for longer also, which is a mood improver. Feeling starved can really bring you down! The reason these grains elevate your mood is that they are not difficult to digest. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps kick start a rise in your blood sugar which in turn kicks up your mood to a happier place.

Green tea is actually excellent for your mood. You were just waiting to read that in this article, weren’t you? Green tea is chock-full of an amino acid referred to as L-theanine. Studies have shown that this amino acid basically stimulates brain waves. This helps sharpen your mental energy while simultaneously calming your body. You knew that green tea helps you be a lot healthier. And now you are aware that it can help you be happier too!

As you can see, you don’t need to stuff your face with junk food when you are wanting to feel better! Try a few of these tips instead.
